Field Trip to Falls Mill

Our class went on a field trip to Falls Mill in Belvidere, Tennessee.

Falls Mill was built in 1873 as a cotton and woolen factory.  It has also been used as a cotton mill, woodworking shop, and grist mill.

We learned about animal tracks and pelts.

Here I am measuring the water temperature of the stream.
It was 60 degrees.

It was very beautiful!

Here are some close up pictures of the power wheel at Falls Mill.

That's a long way down!

Luna Moths

                                Luna Moths🦋

According to www.butterfliesandmoths.org here are some facts about Luna Moths:
Family: Saturniidae
Subfamily: Saturniinae
Identification: Hindwings have long curving tails. Wings are pale green, each with a transparent eyespot. Outer margins are pink in the southern spring brood, yellow in the southern summer brood and in northern populations.
Wing Span: 2 15/16 - 4 1/8 inches (7.5 - 10.5 cm).
Life History: Adults are very strong fliers and are attracted to lights. Mating takes place after midnight, and egg-laying begins that evening. Females lay eggs in small groups or singly on both surfaces of host plant leaves. The eggs hatch in about one week and the caterpillars are sedentary and solitary feeders. Leaves and silk are used to spin papery brown cocoons in litter under the host plant.
Flight: One brood from May-July in the north, two to three broods from March-September in the south.
Caterpillar Hosts: A variety of trees including white birch (Betula papyrifera), persimmon (Diospyros virginiana), sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), hickories (Carya), walnuts (Juglans), and sumacs.
Habitat: Deciduous hardwood forests.
Range: Common. Nova Scotia west to Saskatchewan and eastern North Dakota; south to central Florida, the Gulf Coast, and eastern Texas.

When i went to Falls Mill I saw this:
This is a luna moth cocoon about 2 months old.

I found this video on YouTube from Jeff Trambacki:

Wind

WIND🌬🍃

Have you ever been outside and felt the wind blow around you? I have and I wondered what causes the wind to blow.

I found this information on weatherquestions.com:

What causes wind?

"Wind is caused by air flowing from high pressure to low pressure.  Since the Earth is rotating, however, the air does not flow directly from high to low pressure, but it is deflected to the right (in the Northern Hemisphere; to the left in the Southern Hemisphere), so that the wind flows mostly around the high and low pressure areas."

I had Kite Day at my school on 3/30/17. Here are some pictures:

When I started my flight, the kite was high in the sky.

I found out that the higher the kite flew, the stronger the wind blew.

When I got to the end of my string, the wind got really strong. It stayed up because the wind has to push the clouds, right? So the wind up there is really, and I mean really, strong!

I wanted to show you guys how fast it took flight. So, here is my video:

There are five different kinds of Labrador Retrievers. Some kinds are chocolate (brown),  golden (yellow), blonde (white), silver (gray), and black.

Here are some labs.

According to dogtime.com, labrador retrievers  spent their days working alongside their owners, retrieving fish who had escaped hooks and towing in lines, and then returned home to spend the evening with the fishermen's family.
